[ Ange's too lame to actually record a custom voicemail message, but still, feel free to leave a message after the standard message's beep or just normally call her.

[Now that that's been established, Arakita can move to talking (potentially yelling) about what he actually wants to say, and that's-
....
Uh.
Well, obviously she's alive, so that's that and the purpose of this call has been fulfilled. Arakita also knows that calling someone, yelling at them for not picking up on the first ring, and then immediately hanging up is really, really stupid, probably more stupid than calling them in the first place. Saying "so you didn't go back and jump after I left, right" is about stupid to the power of ten, and he knows the answer to "so you're better now, right".
This doesn't leave him with much but uncomfortable, frustrated silence for a few seconds.]
People will think you disappeared or something if you don't pick up the damn phone, idiot.
[yeah, people totally will.]
no subject
I doubt it. [ It's not the same hollow defeatist tone as she used back there on that rooftop, but there's somewhat of a same sentiment about it. Just one she sounds an awful lot more okay with, for some reason. ]
Is there even anyone who pays enough attention to me to realise that?
[ Yeah....... people... ]
I'd be surprised if anyone found out within a month or two's worth of time before someone is like "oh, hey, I haven't seen that gloomy girl around, ruining the atmosphere. What's up with that?"
no subject
God, she's so annoying, with her monotone and stiff-face.
That's whats bothering him here.]
Seriously? That's your crappy justification? Of course they'll say shit like that if you're trying to prove 'em right.
[...probably harsher than necessary.]
Come on. There's gotta be some dumbass around here that'll spout obnoxious cheerfulness at you if you want that.
[...way harsher than necessary.]
no subject
But it's exactly that last fact that makes her think most of them wouldn't even notice. Not that she can't cover it up with a thick layer of casualness so it seems like she doesn't care, though. ]
Why are you so convinced of that?
[ giving arakita philosophical life crisises over dumb shit.. always.. ]
no subject
[And if they're cheerful towards someone like him, they'll be definitely cheerful to an expressionless girl like her.]
If they're still going on about it here, then they ain't gonna stop just because you're a weird stiff-face.
[Translation: You're not terrible enough to make people not care about you, probably.]
no subject
[ No, it doesn't. People still vomit sunshine and rainbows at her at every corner - a girl can't even try to jump off a building in peace without running into at least five of them, it's seriously inconvenient.
.. A small pause, and then there's a sound like she's lazily rolling over. The exciting life of Ange Ushiromiya.. ]
Should I teach you that power too? It might make you sound a little less crany for once. It doesn't suit a prince.
no subject
Ghh- how many times do I have to fucking tell you-
[Actually, after a click of his tongue, he probably realizes that number does not exist. He's stuck with that name, isn't he. It's futile, isn't it.]
No way would I want to become like that. I've had enough of dealing with that shit before I got dumped here!
[And he gets enough comments about his face. Changing his usual expression would probably double them.]
'sides, you said you were the "witch" here. Keep your weird powers to yourself.
no subject
Instead a soft sound escapes her - it's hard to make out just what sort of emotion or intention is behind it. ]
You believed that I'm a witch, but you're still worrying about me?
no subject
Frustration, yeah. That was it. Frustration at her Wrong Assessment.]
Ah? When did I say I was worrying about you?!
[He never said anything about it, sure.]
Hey, never said I believed you either. It just sounds like more of that fairy tale crap you keep talkin' about.
...
Tch- Even if you're some kinda witch, it's not like you've done any magical bullshit to me.
[that's where 75% of his dislike of "freak powers" comes from, honestly.]
no subject
And the last thing she wants is for the tables to be turned around on her and forcing her into the tsun position here. She's more than fine with that remaining on just his plate. ]
I'm pretty sure any magic would be wasted on you. If I'd make you smile just a little bit more, people might start thinking you've turned into a total psycho. It doesn't suit you.
[ At least she genuinely believes that last part.. but Arakita is probably capable of being happy in his own way without smiling. Or maybe with just slightly less scowling. Who knows. ]
I wasn't lying though. I really am a witch.
no subject
The second part of that, however, is something he doesn't have a fast or sharp quip to reply with. It takes him a moment.]
...Seriously? A robot, a vampire, that psychic guy, now you... Is no one in this goddamn city normal?
[Truly spoken like someone who knows the answer is "no".
He pauses for a second, and then abruptly-]
So, what can you do?
no subject
But at least she won't linger on it for too long. ]
Anyway, isn't that question a little hard to answer? What, do you expect me to do some magic trick for your birthday party?
no subject
You can't just go on about how bein' a witch is a reason to hate you and then do nothing to prove it! What the hell!
[A loud "hmph".]
Don't tell me you've got "invisible magic" or some bullshit.
no subject
Fine. You know what, Arakita. You want witch bullshit? Because she can reproduce witch bullshit pretty well if she has to, you know.
Her tone is even flatter than usually - like she's reciting something. ]
On the first twilight, offer the six chosen by the key as sacrifices.
On the second twilight, those who remain shall tear apart the two who are close.
On the third twilight, those who remain shall praise my noble name.
On the fourth twilight, gouge the head and kill.
On the fifth twilight, gouge the chest and kill.
On the sixth twilight, gouge the stomach and kill.
On the seventh twilight, gouge the knee and kill.
On the eighth twilight, gouge the leg and kill.
On the ninth twilight, the witch shall revive, and none shall be left alive.
[ ... ]
Well, I guess not all of those relate to my powers though, but most of them do. [ THE ONLY EXPLANATION SHE PROVIDES.. APPARENTLY.. ]
no subject
He goes in with that sort of flippant attitude towards whatever she's about to explain, and what sounds like the beginning of the worst nursery rhyme ever turns into... something.
By the fourth line, he didn't know what to expect, but it was not that, Whatever that was.
It was- creepy. disturbing. In a careless, flat, practiced tone of voice that he decided he really didn't like hearing, at all.]
--What the fuck?!
[The only reaction he provides... initially. It's not difficult to come up with more after a half a second.]
So what, your power is to- come back to life after stabbing someone fucking everywhere and killing people as sacrifices?!
[That's what he got, at least, from hearing it once in a monotone.]
no subject
Technically that was referring to another witch, so that reviving part doesn't apply to me. [ She's explaining it as if he asked about some scientific problem rather than.. you know, creepy horror death. ] But the killing part, yeah. All that gouging and tearing is part of my power, I sort of inherited from her. So I guess you could call her my predecessor.
no subject
Gouging and tearing-- if she can just do that by willing it (because that's what magic can do, right), then that's way fucking worse than the only other "magic" he's really seen here.
His initial, instinctual reaction- to both what she's saying and how she's saying it- is to back away from this "freaky shit" and react how he did with every other time something like this had been thrown at him here, especially since she may well possibly be admitting to murder.
But that's not the important part of this, or the way he knows he "should" react. Even in a situation so far removed from what he's used to, Arakita will always argue that words are meaningless without action behind them. He remembers this after second of silent thinking.]
...Just because you can doesn't mean you have, right?
no subject
I have.
[ To Ange's credit, it doesn't come out as easily as the rest did. There's an actual moment of hesitation, although it's hard to pin down why - did she have to consider whether she'd tell him? Did she have to think about whether it really counts as killing since Umineko is the most convoluted canon to have graced this Earth since Evangelion? Who knows. ]
I killed a whole group of men with it back home. [ Granted, those people were out to kill her and it was a last move of self-defense, but for the moment, she's leaving it out purposefully. Just to see what he'll say. ]
Why..? Would you rather have let me jump back then, knowing this?
no subject
What the hell, Ange.
She's bluntly honest, and even if she liked to spin up fairy-tale jokes, he doesn't thing she would lie about something like this.
He has good sense about people, he knows and is going to trust that. She's weird, but she's not insane. She's apathetic and blunt, but not sociopathic. She didn't seem like the type to do it for fun or because she felt like it.
...If her tears back then, on the very ledge she's asking about, were honest. He thought they were.
It isn't having faith in her (he's not admitting that it is), but he concludes that she has to have a reason for it.]
Why'd you do it.
[He's not giving her an answer to her question until she answers that-- statement. It's less of a question and much more of a demand. If this were a video feed rather than an audio, his stare would be directly and piercingly on her- but even that can almost be felt through his voice.]
no subject
What, is he giving her a chance even though she said that..? She's come to accept there's just some people here in Haven who will throw unconditional trust and love to everyone like some magical girl, but he's not like that. Then why is he specifically trusting her on this one, that she has a good explanation for it?
She doesn't get it, but even so, it's enough to give her the kind of feeling that makes her not want to lie or joke about the reason - she answers honestly. ]
My mother's side of the family is.. well, yakuza, to put it bluntly. My aunt came after me to get rid of me so she'd inherit my family's fortune. It was either that or just letting myself get humiliated and slaughtered by her.
no subject
Really, by now, he should have expected something unbelievable, but that explanation still beyond far-fetched. Even for a supposed witch, and he knows he should have trouble believing it.
How deep did it go with this girl? His reaction, as expected, comes out quickly and loudly.]
Of course it's something fucked up like that. You're a witch? Your Yakuza aunt's trying to kill you for some money? You killed them all to save yourself? Seriously, is there anything about you that isn't weird?!
[And why does that bother him so much on a level that isn't annoyance at her?
A second passes, and the belligerent tone leaves his voice with a huff. What is he doing, even he doesn't fully feel confident in this- and that's unusual, for him.]
I haven't caught you lying yet, and you're not insane. You wouldn't fucking murder someone for nothing. But don't think I'm just forgetting about what you did, even if you ain't lying and had a good reason for it.
[Arakita never really bothered with those theoretical ethic questions that everyone seemed to love to debate about, but he thinks he's somewhere in between "murder can be justified" and "murder is always wrong".
Haven's changing him.]
And don't let me catch you lyin' either. That's when I'll regret pulling you away from that ledge.
[And that's the answer to her question that he'll stick to- for now.]
1 / 2
It's just a fact - and it's how she deals with Haven more easily than most people might, when she's already accepted the fact that everything in her life is weird.
But it's the rest that catches her off guard a little, just enough for words to slip out of her mouth. ]
.. I wouldn't.
[ Lie to you, that is. Thankfully she doesn't say that as well, but it's still very easily implied by the way she says it so softly, almost as if she's in some sort of daze.
(Not that it isn't true - she would mess with him in a deadpan way, yes, but she wouldn't lie about the actually important things.) ]
no subject
What I'm saying is that you'd yell at me forever if I lied, and it'd be a huge pain. Do you think I'm some sort of weird masochist who'd willingly undergo that?
no subject
He's quiet, for the moment, silently finalizing the decision to trust her on this- for the moment, at least.
But with her return to something defensively sarcastic, he feels the need to follow her there. If she's not going to be vulnerable, neither will he.
He puffs up his chest, and that familiar belligerent tone returns. Here, it's territory where he's much more confident.]
Justify it however you want, I don't care. Just don't lie.
[He snorts, clearly a measure to return to that familiar territory rather than from actual deep annoyance.]
Who said anything about being a masochist? [what did he say about the weird sex shit, ange.] Don't make it weirder than it already is, moron.
no subject
So here they are, going back to being sarcastic like usually just since it's the only way they know how to deal with this stuff.. ]
It was weird from the beginning. Don't call girls randomly, they'll start thinking you want a date. [ Not that it's the case.. at all.. but it's just one of Ange's Usual Retorts by now. ] Sorry, I'm not interested.
[ And with that she just... hangs up..................
Sorry, Arakita, she appreciates your concern, she just doesn't know how to deal with it ever. ]
