[ Ragna stops himself from barging into Ange's room with no warning at the last second. Honestly, when has it become so awkward to walk in there, when he used to do that like he owns the place? (Well, he technically does, just on paper.) It feels like it was just a little time ago that he was still helping her put on her clothes and brush her hair for her. People often tell him that she's grown into a fine young woman, but it's hard for him to think about her that way, when she's always been and always will be his cute little sister to him.
He shakes his head to himself and knocks on the door. After waiting for a moment that would make it socially acceptable to enter (or so he hopes), he opens the door, but doesn't walk in, staying in the doorway instead. That's a good enough compromise, right? ]
Hey. Dinner's almost ready.
[ It's more or less all he's been meaning to say, so he makes a motion like he wants to retreat... but pauses mid-step. ]
... How's it going?
[ They haven't had a chance to talk about, uh... everything. With whatever it is that's happening in Aldrip, it's been... a tiring couple of days, to say the least, and truth to be told, Ragna was content not discussing it with anyone. But as much as he wants to shove his own feelings on the matter into a locker and forget about it, he could never bring himself to ignore how his sister feels. In fact, it's his job to help her out now more than ever, both as her brother and a surrogate parent. ]
[ It's the question that seems to catch her off guard. Ange looks like she was ready to get off her bed - where she's currently sitting and combing her hair with a brush - and say that she'll be right over in the kitchen to eat, but it's the question that makes the girl pause instead.
Her hand stops moving for a moment, instead just holding the brush idly as she stares over in Ragna's direction. It's not like it's totally a strange thing for her brother to ask her how she's doing. After all, this is her brother. He's always taken care of her, ever since they lost their parents when Ange was barely even old enough to remember them.
But it feels like there's something a little more to it now, and it takes a moment for the pieces to click in place in Ange's mind. ]
Oh, is this about all the strange stuff? I first thought people were just pranking others with the stuff going missing around town, but right now.. I don't know anymore. So many people are talking about it all the time.
[ Another slight pause, and then she adds, looking over at him: ]
Have people been talking to you about it too, big bro?
[ Ragna winces slightly as the intentions behind his seemingly innocuous question are immediately brought to light. Just as expected from Ange... He's not sure which of their parents she's inherited her sharp wits from, but he skipped out on that gene, that's for sure. The man scratches the back of his head, wondering what's the best angle to approach the subject... The last thing he wants is to make his sister worry, but he's never been good at hiding things from her. He awkwardly clears his throat before continuing, hoping he comes across as casual and uninterested in the ordeal as he wishes he actually was. ]
... Mhmm. It's all the customers talk about these days. Things going missing, things appearing where they shouldn't... [ He makes a small pause, biting his lip. ] ... Remembering shit that's never actually happened...
[ See, that's the part that bothers him; stuff going missing is unsettling and annoying, but those... dreams? Visions? Whatever they are, they're a whole different beast. How could something that hasn't occurred feel so... real? And how could he ever tell Ange that somehow, for some reason... he now remembers having a little sister who isn't her?
Ragna shakes his head, letting out a small sigh. He might have thought about his life as ordinary and borderline boring a couple of weeks ago, but now he kind of wishes he could go back to that. ]
[ She frowns a little bit, now fully putting down the brush. ]
Did you see something that bothered you?
[ .. sorry, Ragna. It's true that your sister is just way too sharp when it comes to things like these. Even though he's doing his best to hide it, it's like she can see right through him. Obviously not enough to know exactly what is bothering him, since she has no clue what sort of visions he may have had, but..
She can tell that something is bothering her brother right now.
Ange stands up from the bed, walking over to the doorway to join him there. ]
You can tell me if that's the case, you know. Isn't that what I'm here for? [ Sure, sure, Ange is the younger sibling. She's aware of that, and also very much aware of how much Ragna has done for her over the years, but..
It's not like she doesn't want to help him out too. And this is one of those rare ways in which she can do that. ]
[ Aw, crap. How is it that she can always see through him like this? Granted, she's known him her whole life, so that's probably a factor, but still! It's not like he wants to lie to her, but he does wish he was better at keeping his cards closer to his chest... mostly so he could avoid making his sister worry. He wants her to live her life free of stress and concerns, least of all about him in particular. ]
Aaah, no, that's not what I was─ I mean, it's no big deal, right?
[ Smooth like sandpaper. But he is her older brother, and it's his role to protect her; not the other way round. The last thing she should worry about are his problems. As such, he reaches out for her head and ruffles her hair nonchalantly, ruining all her hard work from a moment ago. ]
I just gotta make sure you haven't been picking up any weird shit.
It's hard to tell if it's because of what he's saying or because of the hard work he is currenly very much ruining. Either way, a moment later she does speak up with: ]
You're avoiding the question!
[ Or half-avoiding it. Technically he did answer it, but.. his words are downplaying the worry that's hanging so obviously around him right now that Ange is pretty sure even someone who isn't related to him would be able to pick up on it. ]
You know there's nothing to worry about as long as we're together, right? We've dealt with enough already. The town being a little weird isn't any worse than all of that.
