Maybe. But you don't have to be strongest around to be strong, that's not how it works. I... Well I've seen enough of what you've been through. I've seen you stand up again after being hurt, I've seen your resolve. That's you're real strength there, Ange.
[Ruby had been through enough on her own to know that brute strength wasn't the only kind out there and she wasn't going to let her girlfriend believe that for a second.]
And you see. That's what I'm talking about- You're a girl knows what she's capable but even if the challenge is above her. She's still going to rise up and face it anyways. That's real strength right there. If you ask me.
[ Ange knows that often determination isn't enough. That there's often much bigger forces at play, forces that you have no chance to counter. Forces that - inevitably - will hurt her and Ruby here too, without them being able to do much about it.
And yet Ruby is still speaking out such unshakeable belief in her. It's definitely much more than a girl like her deserves, but Ange can't deny the way it makes her heart feel like it's been set on fire - but in a good way.
Even if it's also a way that makes her face burn with a blush, and he leans over to bury her face against Ruby's shoulder in an attempt to hide it and be close to the other at the same time. ]
W-Well, you're the same, you know.. [ She says, trying to speak up despite the fluster. ] Maybe we're just a pair of overdetermined idiots.
[The sudden dive into her shoulder wasn't exactly what Ruby had expected, but it was far from unpleasant. She just laughed and let her tilt to it's side to rest against Ange's.
She was pretty sure she had proven her point.]
Yeah? Well, I guess I am. [And she lets her arm wrap around Ange a little tighter.]
But I like that about us- We'll just power through anything that comes our way, right?
[ It's half-mumbled against Ruby's shoulder. Because Ange refuses to think of them fully giving in to anything here in Deerington, refuses to think of Ruby being permanently broken entirely because of something - not in body, but in spirit. It'd be the absolute worst case scenario.
Slowly she starts pulling back a little again. Not enough to escape the arm that's around her, but enough so her face is no longer full on resting against the other girl. Her face is still slightly coloured, but not entirely red anymore. ]
And let's practice at least a little bit of caution along the way. Because..
[ Her voice trails off, and Ange gently runs a finger along a scar on Ruby's upper arm, only barely sticking out from under the short sleeves of her shirt. ]
I mean.. I don't mind that you have these, but it's now kind of my job to prevent any future ones.
[She returns that mumble. Ruby was just as worried for Ange as she was for her. She didn't want her to end up alone and bullied and beaten down by the world anymore than she already had been. Ruby was going to fight to protect the happiness they were starting to build together with everything she had.
She feels a tingle on her arm as Ange's finger trail up along the scar. That one in particular was an interesting one for Ange to bring up. Ruby remembered the day she had received it vividly. It had been painful, but it had been worth taking the shot for the person she had been protecting.
She gave a little smile at that very same person.]
Okay- Okay.
I think I can try to be a little safer from here on out. You have to promise me you wont go jumping in front of spears to protect me from getting more.
Or at least we can try to avoid getting matching scars.
[She raises her free hand and gently places it on Ange's cheek.]
Because well- It might have been risky but keeping you from getting hurt was more than worth it.
[ Ange remembers that time too. Of course she does. It has been so early on during her stay in Deerington, one of the first things to happen after the sinking of the Titanic. The first time she was confronted with something from home in this place - and the first time someone had been right there to help her out, rather than Ange having to deal with it all by herself.
And she knows it was more of a general thing back then. They didn't even know each other very well, not like the way they do now. There's no way either of them could have known back them how they'd end up together now. Ruby had just protected her because that girl can never see something like that and not try to protect someone.
All these scars are proof of that.
But they are also - according to Ruby - worth it. (Are they? A voice whispers in the back of her head. There's no way I'm worth something like that.) ]
I wish there was some way to go about this without either of us getting hurt.
[ Because Ange can't promise to not jump in front of Ruby to save her from things. Not that she wants to get hurt, since she knows the other wouldn't like that, but if the alternative is watching Ruby suffer..? The warmth of the hand on her cheek reminds her that she could never let that happen. ]
.. let's find some random person to throw in the way of anything that'd hurt us. [ JUST A JOKE. Don't worry. Ange's tone makes it very obvious. There's no way she'd just throw someone innocent randomly under the bus either. ] Until this dumb place is done torturing us for no good reason.
[Ruby shifted gently as she considered Ange's words. She did wish there was a way to do this without getting hurt, but Deerington wasn't the kind of place that just stopped hurting people. As long as they were here she knew she'd be throwing herself or others in the way of harm to stop it.
She leans in to Ange a little further and nods.]
Me too... Let's just keep trying to protect one another until we figure something else.
[She grins at the joke and pokes at Ange with her elbow.]
Deal, we'll find the meanest, grumpiest guy here and just throw him in there.
